POSITION SUMMARY

As a Data Visualization Scientist in our Analytics – Business Intelligence and Visualization team, you will create innovative visualization systems that demonstrate the business value of Government digital marketing platform directly to our customers and stakeholders. 

 

Our visualization challenges span hundreds of millions of detailed profiles across hundreds of millions of web sites and apps tied together by sophisticated real-time analytics that make near instantaneous decisions on messaging to those profiles billions of times a day.  This provides an incredibly rich environment of business questions and answers that are hidden within petabytes of data. 

 

You will be a key team member creating effective visualization tools that use the data to answer those questions in an engaging, intuitive and informative manner.  This is a multi-faceted effort involving an array of visualization tools such as D3.js, WebGL, Three.js, Tableau and more.  We are looking for strong candidates with extensive experience in visualization programming and algorithms who can push the boundary beyond conventional charting.

 

Our team works closely with business and analytics units across the company, and provides everything from business-specific dashboards to advanced R&D prototypes.  As a member of this team you will have an opportunity to have a broad impact on the company, as well as to dive deep into technical areas.

 

 

Responsibilities

Research and prototype innovative visualizations that demonstrate the value of our platform. Implement production versions of the visualizations using your programming skills in Javascript, D3, WebGL and other libraries and frameworks.

Meet with internal business units and stakeholders to understand their requirements and propose visualization and interaction systems that meet those. Work closely with the Analytics team to understand intricacies of the analytics models in such a way that we can demonstrate the benefits of our analytics to our customers. Be a supportive and positive contributor in a highly collaborative team with shared and overlapping responsibilities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create business intelligence dashboards and visualizations to produce insights to complex problem data in ways that assist in translating organizational problem statements into actionable decision making practices.

 

  • Help formulate and facilitate the engineering of multi-dimensional databases, data models, and visualizations to accomplish the strategic goals of Business Intelligence and Analytics and help facilitate decision making by presenting complex data in a focused manner.

 

  • Support the Business Intelligence/Analytics Data Analyst and Analytics Manager with the understanding of business and data requirements, and iteratively design visualizations for initial concepts and prototypes that can be presented to customers for feedback.

 

  • Collaboratively identify the best means to visually depict the intermediate as well as final data analytics results in ways to provide effective process for mining new insights and assisting in decision making for solving complex problems.

 

  • Apply design and data analysis techniques to organize the presentation of data in visually innovative ways to make it easier to understand, insightful, and actionable by end users.

 

  • Manage a repository of re-usable data visualization templates and views.

 

  • Design, develop, & deploy application components.

 

  • Translate business requirements into technical solutions.

 

  • Communicate development status and escalate issues to management.

 

  • May research alternative development methodologies and make recommendations for team improvement. Provide ad hoc reporting as requested by staff.

 

  • Ensure the integrity of data.

 

  • Strong organizational and time management skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to multi-task and to prioritize tasks, manage workload, and meet deadlines. Ability to work with minimal supervision.

 

  • Supports the Government in the enforcement of the design and implementation of trusted relationships among external systems and architectures

Qualifications

  • Excellent understanding of machine learning techniques and algorithms, such as k-NN, Naive Bayes, SVM, Decision Forests, etc.
  • Experience with common data science toolkits, such as R, Weka, NumPy, MatLab, etc
  • Great communication skills
  • Experience with data visualization tools, such as D3.js, GGplot, etc.
  • Proficiency in using query languages such as SQL, Hive, Pig
  • Experience with NoSQL databases, such as MongoDB, Cassandra, HBase
  • Good applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, etc.
  • Good scripting and programming skills

 

Educational Requirements:

A master's degree in the specialized field plus a minimum of 3 year of applicable experience; or, a bachelor's degree in the specialized field plus 7 years of applicable experience; or, a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 9 years of specialized experience

Standard Qualification Applies Plus

Shall have 8 years of experience in designing and developing network performance visualization products and big data visualization products, to include writing code to produce these products from raw data and/or processed data gathered during network/tactical network lab and field events. Strong knowledge of Java, HTML5, User interfaces design principles, R and Matlab visualization libraries and various packages.
